Regina Mundi Church was a place of sanctuary during the youth uprisings in 1976. When you enter this humble Catholic church, it is with the knowledge that 5000 youngsters sought refuge within the walls from the bullets of the police. The political rallies held here faintly echo through the aisles and yet the atmosphere is one of peace.
The June 16 Memorial Acre focuses on the routes used by the students and complements the narrative of the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum.
This extensive tour of Soweto is ended by visiting the Sowetan home of Nelson Mandela.
